Chandigarh to enhance surveillance with ₹5-crore CCTVs near High Court

Chandigarh allocates ₹5-crore for CCTV installation on roads leading to High Court

In response to a concerning incident in September 2022, where a lawyer's car was vandalized by the family members of a runaway couple, the Chandigarh administration has taken proactive steps to enhance security around the high court. This initiative, disclosed during a suo-motu proceeding initiated by the high court, involves the installation of CCTV cameras along roads leading to the high court complex.

CCTV installation at ₹5.15 crore estimated cost

The Chandigarh administration informed the Punjab and Haryana high court about the planned installation of CCTV cameras, totaling an estimated cost of ₹5.15 crore. The decision was made after a thorough security audit conducted by teams from the public works department, police, and high court administration, along with experts.

As per Anil Mehta, the UT’s senior standing counsel, the work has already commenced and is scheduled to be completed within 18 months. The proposal includes the installation of CCTV cameras on remote-operated hydraulic retractable stainless steel bollards along two roads and certain locations outside the main building.

This security measure was prompted by the bar body's request for enhanced security around the high court main complex building and its access roads following the September 2022 incident. The installation of CCTV cameras on strategically selected points aims to ensure a safer environment, deterring potential security threats and providing reassurance to the legal community and visitors.
